Flex-Axiom used to study domain re-arrangements of microparticles upon stretching by phase contrast AFM imaging

This publication from the Polish Academy of Sciences reports the preparation of spheroidal polystyrene core and polyglycidol-rich microparticles by stretching of appropriate core-shell microspheres embedded into a poly(vinyl alcohol) film. The Flex-Axiom system was used to investigate in more detail the change of the surface structure upon stretching a microsphere into a spheroidal particle. AFM images revealed that the surfaces of both the microspheres and the spheroidal particles are not homogeneous but show phase separation into nanodomains. In particular, AFM phase images illustrated that on the one hand side the dimensions of the domains did not change upon stretching. On the other hand both the orientation of the domains and their shape changed significantly.
