Biomimetic Surface Structuring Using Laser Based Interferometric Methods

Researchers from the TU Dresden and Fraunhofer IWS have used laser-based interferometric methods to create biomimetic surfaces with micrometer and sub-micrometer features on polymeric and metallic surfaces. Confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the surfaces structurally, but for surfaces with periodicities and structures below 1 µm, the Nanosurf CoreAFM was used for their characterization. The structures were subsequently compared with the wettability obtained from contact angle measurements.
